    1. This is a collection of short stories and one novella by Howard Waldrop. Having read his alternative history novel Them Bones, it's obvious given the contents of this volume that alternative histories are a favourite theme of Waldrop's as some of the stories here are based around those too.Others are whimsy based on a what-if idea such as what if time travellers arrived in a world based on the works of the great artists, or what if all the 1950s low budget films about alien invasions, featuring [...]

    2. No one--and I mean no one at all--writes a short story like Howard Waldrop. If you like Howard's stories, that's unfortunate, because that means that you have to wait for your next fix from the single source rather than being able to rely on multiple suppliers. But them's the breaks when you're talking about a writer who has a unique style and voice. This collection from 1987 showcases seven of those wonderful stories, bracketed by an introduction from Gardner Dozois and an afterword by Lewis Shi [...]

    3. This collection comprises a number of odd stories where history mixes up with something a little more bizarre. In "All about Strange Monsters of the Recent Past," the giant insects and animals from all the old movies have come out, and started destroying the world for real. Only this time, the Army isn't powerful enough to stop them. This was my second-favorite of the bunch, as the wry humor plays with both the old movies and the current havoc."Helpless, helpless," was my favorite of the book, as [...]

    4. Only under the threat of pain of death would I choose a favourite Waldrop collection but if I had toen it would be Strange MonstersIt may not contain Fin de Cycle, Der Untergang, or El Castillo, but it does have the magical and often heartbreaking genius of Waldropiania such as Fair Game, What Makes, and The LionsAn element of horror is definitely present in this collection as Hemingway 's shade hunts a wild man in the old country, future time travellers get lost in eschatological baroque painti [...]

    5. Waldrop wrote some of the best short fiction in the speculative field a decade or three ago, and this collection contains some of his best. One of his hallmarks was in blending pop-culture and history, which he does to good effect in stories like A Dozen Tough Jobs in which the labors of Hercules are set in the 1920's rural south, or my two favorites in this book, Flying Saucer Rock and Roll and the title story.

    6. An excellent collection of excellent stories, the best being A Dozen Tough Jobs, a retelling of the Hercules myth in the South in the 20s. Some are light confections, some are more substantial dishes, but all are crafted carefully, though some are more pleasing than others. The Lions are Asleep This Night and He-We-Await are also excellent stories in this collection.
