    About "Kelly Bowen"

    1. Kelly Bowen

Kelly Bowen grew up in Manitoba, Canada She worked her way through her teenage years as a back country trail guide and ranch hand She attended the University of Manitoba and earned a Master of Science degree in veterinary physiology and endocrinology. But it was Kelly s infatuation with history and a weakness for a good love story that led her down the path of historical romance When she is not writing, she seizes every opportunity to explore ruins and battlefields.Currently, Kelly lives in Winnipeg with her husband and two boys, all of whom are wonderfully patient with the writing process Except, that is, when they need a goalie for street hockey.

    1. DNF @ 25%. Man, the heroine is one mean and stuck up little bitch. Here's her description of one of her companions:The oldest of the two wardens she’d christened Bart, for the woman’s resemblance to a particularly substantial mastiff Viola’s family had owned when she was a child. The flattened face, drooping jowls, boxlike head, and small, squinty eyes were as characteristic of the buxom woman as they had been of the canine. Granted, the woman didn’t drool like old Bart had, but she cert [...]

    2. I picked up this novella because I’ve enjoyed other books in this series by Ms Bowen, and although it’s entertaining and the writing is as deftly accomplished as that in the author’s full length books, A Lady’s Guide to Skirting Scandal is a piece of relatively insubstantial fluff.Readers of I've Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm will recall that Viola Hextall, sister of the Earl of Boden, tried to trap his friend, the Duke of Worth into marriage, believing that only marriage to one of such lo [...]

    3. 3.5 stars / B rating - read my review on Fiction Vixen Book Reviews: fictionvixen/review-ladys-This was my first book by Kelly Bowen and it definitely won’t be my last. Although it was only a novella, I can tell that she’s able to write compelling characters and good chemistry, so I’m looking forward to see what she can do with a full-length novel.Series. For those who like to read books in order, this is #2.5 in the Lords of Worth series (keep an eye out for my review on book #3, featurin [...]

    4. 3.5 Stars. Bored out of her mind on a punitive transatlantic voyage with two stuffy old birds for chaperones, young, vivacious Viola decides to strike up a flirtation with the handsome ship's surgeon to occupy her time. But she doesn't count on finding his work so interesting, or on his willingness to let her assist, or on how boldly he touches her. Even more disconcerting is how responsive she is to that touch, especially since she has her mind set on marrying an English duke to bolster her fam [...]

    5. I received an ARC of this book from the Publisher, via Netgalley, this does not affect my opinion of this book or the content of my review.I’ve kind of gone about this series all backwards, the first book I read in this series was You’re the Earl That I Want, which is the third book in the series. I enjoyed it and felt it worked well as a stand alone, so now I am working my way backwards I guess. I suppose I could have slipped this review in before publishing the other, but since that wasn [...]

    6. My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin: witandsin/2015/07A Lady’s Guide to Skirting Scandal is a delightful, effervescent read featuring an irrepressible heroine and the straightforward surgeon who captures her heart. After her machinations land her in trouble, Lady Viola Hextall is packed up by her brother and sent off to New York to do her penance. Viola hasn’t even arrived in America and she’s already counting the days until her return to London where she can snare a duke. Though a soci [...]

    7. This is a good short story! We met Viola, determined to marry a duke, in Kelly's first book (I've Got My Duke to Keep Me Warm). Due to her escapades, her brother decides to send her to America for a visit. While on board, she meets and falls in love with the ship's doctor - definitely not a duke! This is the story of growing up and learning what is truly important to you. I liked it!

    8. I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest reviewThis sounded like a fun short historical romance book and that's exactly what it was. I quite enjoyed it. The setting was fun and took place on a boat. Lady Viola Hextall is bored and decided to start a conversation with the surgeon Nathaniel Shaw. Viola thought she knew what she wanted out of life, marry a duke and become a duchess, Nathaniel makes her question things. I quite liked the message of this short story about t [...]

    9. 4 Stars I received a free eARC of this book from Forever Yours via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was one entertaining and romantic story! Novellas are normally difficult for me to enjoy due to their shortened page length which often results in a lack of character and/or relationship development. Well, A Lady's Guide to Skirting Scandal is one of those rare novellas that felt like a fully realized story. I could have kept reading about Viola and Nate, but I never felt that the s [...]

    10. *I received an ARC from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review.* I’m really not much of a novella reader. But once I saw that this historical romance featured a surgeon hero and an earl’s sister as a heroine, I was definitely intrigued. I absolutely love class differences in romance. Add to that my love of all things in this genre right now, and how could I say no? Lady Viola started out the story a bit unlikable. She only wanted to be a duchess, and couldn’t wait to get back ho [...]

    11. We met Viola once before in an earlier book when she tried to compromise the Duke of Worth into marriage. It was a failed attempt and Viola’s brother sent her packing on one of his ships to New York along with 2 irascible chaperones and a request of the ship’s surgeon, Nathaniel, to look out for her. Viola finds out she has an interest in medicine and Nathaniel finds out he has an interest in Viola. This is a charming short story a lovely, sexy, quick read for an afternoon or evening. Ms. Bow [...]

    13. No, YOU paid .99 for a novella because you couldn't wait for book #2 to come in to your library.

    14. Very enjoyable afternoon read! Packed a lot of info and plot into a novella, but it didn't feel rushed at all. Will definitely read more in this series.

    15. A rather silly read. I had a hard time sticking to it and reading more than few pages in one sitting and it's a novella! It's a story about a frivolous girl who is bored out of her mind on a ship heading from England to New York. She befriends a surgeon and I don't know what exactly happens next (because it wasn't that interesting and I skimmed the book). I'm sure there was minor drama with some sailor's injury, a sex scene and then HEA. Not much angst and not much humour. I don't think I will re [...]

    16. Great story. Viola is soooo bored on the ship. They've been sailing forever and she was only allowed to bring two books (which she has already read) plus she was assigned two chaperones who really keep her on a short lease. One day Viola decides to talk to the ship's surgeon. He offers to lend her a book to read. She ends up helping him suture an injured sailor thereby outraging her chaperones. Wonderful conclusion.

    17. Fun. And a perfect example of how to develop an empty-headed status-obsessed unlikeable female lead into a sympathetic character in about 50 pages total. Nicely done. And obviously worth a minor character losing a couple of fingers in the cause of true love.

    18. A fun side story to the series. I do like that Hextall's rebellious sister runs away to America with a doctor. :)

    19. Suffered from short story-itis. I almost never like them as much as their full length peers, they have to somehow establish emotional intensity so quickly that it never works for me.

    20. Lady Viola Hextall has been packed off to sea, headed for New York, after being a very bad girl. Now she's trapped with two horribly (if perhaps justifiably) strict chaperones, and nothing to do except admire the ship's surgeon who is terribly handsome though not a duke. Nathaniel Shaw might not be a duke, but he's determined to show Viola that she can be more in life than a duchess. A Lady's Guide to Skirting Scandal is a gorgeous short romance, easy to read in a single sitting, but with plenty [...]

    21. Originally Reviewed For: Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and FantasyA Lady's Guide to Skirting Scandal is a nice little place saver in Kelly Bowen's, Lords of Worth Series a sweet little novella that is designed to keep you reading, good news. It works. It's a story about getting a second chance, about finding redemption and maybe love.We first met Lady Viola Hextall in A Good Rogue is Hard to Find and she wasn't all that nice. Sure she was the sweet younger sister but this was a girl on a mission [...]

    22. Originally reviewed for buriedunderromance A LADY’S GUIDE TO SKIRTING SCANDAL, the newest installment of the Lords of Worth series by Kelly Bowen, is a delightful short story of a young lady facing the dilemma of having to choose between social standing or love. It’s a quick read for those times when you don’t want to get involved in a longer novel, and it can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read the other books in the series. Convinced that his younger sister Viola could embarrass the fa [...]

    23. Full review at Smart Bitches, Trashy BooksI read A Lady’s Guide to Skirting Scandal at the dentist while waiting for two fillings. I’m horribly phobic about the dentist so when I say that this story was comforting, it’s high praise indeed. It’s too rushed to go down in literary history as the best story ever, but if you need a quick comfort read you can’t possibly do better than this tale of a social climber who falls madly and inconveniently in love with a ship’s doctor. One of my ma [...]

    24. A short story and a very quick read: Viola is shipped off to New York (after having tried to entrap Lord Worth into marriage in book 2) under the chaperonage of two older women. Nevertheless she manages to become acquainted with Nathaniel, the ship's surgeon, who lends her medical text books and one about the exploration of Missouri, which is where he plans to end up. I think it's clear where this is goingEnjoyable, and the time frame of the romance (in the context of being stuck on a ship toget [...]

    25. Lady Viola Hextall is sailing from England to New York as instructed by her brother to acquire some “life experiences.” It appears that when she did something wrong, her brother, the Earl of Boden, insisted that she not have a season in London, but that she be introduced to society in America. Not at all pleased with this outcome, Viola’s dream has been to marry a Duke and become a Duchess. Of course, she has no particular Duke in mind. That is just her goal.On the ship, Viola is chaperone [...]

    26. I am so glad I found Kelly Bowen's books. I enjoyed this short story very much. Viola Hextall is typical young lady, ambitious, shallow and only interested in marrying into a title, preferably a Duke. She is on a ship heading for America, sent by her brother to teach her a lesson and get her far away from the scandal she has created. Mr Nathaniel Shaw is a surgeon on his way to America to start a new life. He is going to travel west where few people had ever gone before. At first they do not inte [...]
