    1. The Man in the Cage is an excellent, exciting, intriguing, suspenseful,198 page, 1960 mystery novel written by Jack Vance under the name of Ellery Queen. Although I've read all of Vance's published science fiction, I've read only 9 of his 14 mystery novels so far. Of the 9 I've read, this is my favorite. It is extremely well written, and I savored reading many of the sentences and passages as though it was poetry.     2. It's Jack Vance, and that means fun! Well, minor Vance. But still fun.Vance mostly wrote SF and fantasy so I was curious to see how he'd handle a contemporary (for the 60s) thriller. And the answer is: he throws his standard hero into the bars, backstreets and bazaars of Morocco, and weaves the same kind of exotic tourist-punk atmosphere he used to such great effect in his Gaian Reach novels. It's very reminiscent of Casablanca, and I don't think suffers too much by the comparison.Odd tonal shif [...]

    3. Vance also writes mysteries. I gave this one a try. Not the best, but not too bad either. Maybe I will give another one a try.
